Match observations:

Well... Disaster Area certainly lived up to its name... violence,
nudity, and more foreign objects than you can count on both hands. But none of
the events that took place tonight at Disaster Area can compare to what took
place on the alternate pay-per-view channel, at the WWF's show Over The Edge.
Owen Hart, who was supposed to enter the ring via a cable system from the
rafters as Sting has done in the past in WCW, was killed when something went
wrong in the process of lowering him to the ring, and he fell from near the top
of the arena. That is truly a shame, and by comparison all of the other events
of the night are trivial. However, many of the events of Disaster Area are
likely to impact the future of VCW and its wrestlers, and must be acknowledged
in this space.
The first important event tonight was a pair of announcements by James
Lockman... firstly, that Chris Champlain, by virtue of a double-pin against Tim
Bell, was in fact the VCW Television Champion, and had to defend it against Tim
Bell in the Waste-Of-Time, while the man who would still receive his title shot
later in the show, Marylin Silvera, wrestled Rob Solomon. Tim Bell went on to
regain his title and win the match... but he was unable to come out victorious
against Marylin Silvera, who defeated him to earn the VCW Television Title for
a second time.
That title wasn't the only important title with a questionable status
that was decided tonight... the VCW Intercontinental Title, declared vacant
since Marty Jannetty's underhanded victory over Lance Errington, was won again
by Lance Errington tonight, though Marty Jannetty certainly came very close to
winning the title himself. Tonight, Lance Errington just came out ahead.
In fact, that wasn't the only instance where the Golden Society emerged
victorious against DeJohnnyration X, when one considers the outcome of the Lady
Erica Whitmore/Virginia fiasco tonight. First of all, faking an injury, Erica
Whitmore sent Luna Vachon in to do her dirty work against Virginia. Though she
won the match (being a member of the WWF Women's Division is a good way to
learn how to win Evening Gown Matches), Luna was mauled pretty badly, suffering
a knee injury in the match. Then, when forced into a match with Virginia anyway
due to the obvious fakeness of her injury, Erica was beaten senseless for over
seven minutes by Virginia and eventually lost the match, but still came away
with the last laugh, stripping Virginia topless and, thanks to Lance Errington,
severely injuring her knee as well.
Even the undercard had a few events of significance. Bunkhouse Buck and
Dick Slater picked up their first win against credible opponents, defeating
Jessica Judd and Rex Richards in spite of Gabriel Black's promises of reward
and punishment for Jessica Judd. Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater, former WCW
World Tag Team Champions, have proven talent in tag team wrestling... if Stormy
Weathers uses them correctly, he could be managing the VCW World Tag Team
Champions.
The other member of Stormy Weathers's unique brand of clients,
Haigeikobai, wasn't so fortunate... he was destroyed by the much larger,
although equally untalented Super Giant Ninja. This just goes to show that the
bigger they are, the harder they hit... and that Haigeikobai can't even beat
his worthless fellow teammates.
As a result of the Loser-Leaves-Town Match, Hunk Higgins is gone from
VCW after losing to his former partner, Ruby Richard Cage. His unique blend of
arrogance and senility will be missed... ah, no it won't. Who are we kidding!?
The Bull Moose Party obviously just doesn't have what it takes to be in
the VCW World Tag Team Title scene, following a loss against Hell's Bikers last
Monday with a loss tonight in spite of tag team partners Rushmore and Golga.
This means that the Bull Moose Party will not get another title shot against
the Immortals during this title reign... which could be a while, given the
success of the Immortals in recent weeks. Adding further confusion the the VCW
World Tag Team Title picture is the fact that the Manhunters scored a big
victory over the Annihilators and the Ontario Color Show in a tag team triangle
match, and may have just catapulted their standing in the tag team division to
a new level.
The match that truly stole the show tonight, however, was the House of
Pain Match between Devaccio Pola and Bass Rogers... it may have been the best
match ever in VCW. Devaccio Pola's high-flying moves and new-found intensity,
coupled with the deadly hardcore elements of the match served to carry Bass
Rogers's mediocre abilities into the forming of a classic match. Not only did
Devaccio Pola put on a great show, but he did it with devestating
effectiveness, destroying his much larger opponent in the razor wire cage
through the sheer speed and brutality of his attacks. The past four five-star
matches in VCW have all involved Devaccio Pola in some way... this guy is
TALENTED.
David Wright Hubbard's mystery partner was a pleasant surprise to
everyone, as Terry Funk came to VCW for this match. Unfortunately, things
didn't work out for him this time, as the Wrecking Crew (who the crowd was
booing, even though they were a massively popular face team wrestling one of
VCW's hated heels) won the Barbed Wire Death Match by laying Terry Funk out
with the Breakdown. After the match, David Wright Hubbard grew enraged and
attacked Terry Funk, somehow managing to do his Flying Cross Bodypress (which
is always performed on a standing opponent) through a table on his former
partner. Terry Funk was only supposed to be in VCW for this one night, and this
one match... but it's very rare for someone to attack Terry Funk without
getting paid back for it later, so don't rule out a David Wright Hubbard/Terry
Funk match in the future.
Melissa DelArmeggio's career future is now in her brother's hands, as
Neytron DelArmeggio won the ladder match against Melissa tonight, and received
complete control over his sister's contract. Unfortunately, he is expected to
annul her contract and send her away from VCW... so tonight could be the last
anyone sees of Melissa DelArmeggio in a VCW wrestling ring.
Richard Tobian won the Wooden Axe Handle Death Match against the
Torturer tonight, giving him a shot of desperately needed momentum as well as a
measure of revenge for the Torturer's previous attack on his girlfriend,
Katherine, at Random Casualties. Gabriel Black has to be a little concerned
now, after seeing him go through the Torturer in his favorite match, something
that even Troy Black couldn't pull off at Wrestlewar.
After that came the Strap Submission Match, brought about by a
malfunction of the Wheel of Violence and Mayhem in James Lockman's pre-show
announcements, between Troy Black and Falcon. While linked together by the
strap, Troy Black and Falcon had to make one another submit, much like the WCW
match between Kevin Sullivan and Brian Pillman a few years ago. After nearly
forty minutes, Troy Black's seemingly inhuman endurance and pain threshold
overcame Falcon, who sensibly submitted rather than have his leg seriously
damaged in an armlock leglock submission.
The main event match was somewhat of a surprise, as Johnny Smiles
actually put up an amazing fight against Gabriel Black. A fluke victory over
Lance Errington is one thing... but several times during this match, Johnny
came close to beating Gabriel. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, as Gabriel Black
still managed to finish Johnny off with the Destiny Hammer, continuing his
winning streak and successfully retaining the VCW World Title.
Next week, on behalf of VCW, James Lockman will issue an official
statement on the Owen Hart tragedy, as well as a ten-bell salute in his memory.
Additionally, Hell's Bikers will receive a shot at the VCW World Tag Team
Titles held by the Immortals, the future of Melissa DelArmeggio's career (if
any) will be revealed, and much more will take place on the May 24 edition of
VCW Monday Night Wrestling.
