Match observations:
Deck the Halls has come and gone, and on the night after Christmas, all
through the house, VCW delivered one of the most ground-breaking and eventful
pay-per-view events seen this year. Tonight's show could be a tough act to
follow, even for the long-awaited big pay-per-view, Wrestlewar. From top to
bottom, the show was filled with major surprises and events that changed the
face of VCW forever.
Even the Waste-Of-Time wasn't such a waste of time tonight. Not only did
Julian Page earn a major victory over Paul Canyon in a match that was much
better than expected, but we also saw two of VCW's central plots thicken when
Gabriel Black tried to blackmail Lance Errington into relinquishing his title
shot, and Richard Tobian unveiled his chosen referee to be former Four Horsemen
member and multiple NWA titleholder, Tully Blanchard. Both of these early
developments would take yet another turn before the night was over, however...
The Annihilators and the Manhunters resumed their recent conflicts
tonight, with an added element thrown into the mix. Rex Richards was on the
Manhunters' team, making the match three-on-two. Unfortunately for the
Inquisition, Rex Richards's presence wasn't enough to turn the situation around
(it seldom is), and the Annihilators came away with the victory. After some
impressive wins earlier in the year, including a brief reign as VCW World Tag
Team Champions, it would seem the Manhunters are starting to falter. On the
other hand, the Annihilators have to be considered top contenders for the VCW
World Tag Team Titles after their impressive victory tonight.
Hell's Bikers certainly found a suitable wrestler as their fourth man in
the veteran One Man Gang, but unfortunately for them it wasn't enough to
overcome DeJohnnyration X. Since this feud was started by the attack by Hell's
Bikers on Nicole, the Head Cheerleader and manager of the Immortals, it seemed
somehow fitting that this match ended when Johnny Smiles nailed Dick Douglas,
the manager of Hell's Bikers, with the Smiledriver to pick up the victory.
True to his boasting, Neytron DelArmeggio utilized his superior
wrestling skill to overcome Rob Solomon, defending his title with some quick
thinking and a small package. It's a good bet that this feud isn't over,
though; Rob Solomon has never been known to learn his lesson the first time or
give up easily, and Neytron's ego might not let him settle for anything less
than laying Rob Solomon out for a three count with the Piledriver. Especially
when you consider Rob Solomon's high emotions coming into this match, it's hard
to believe that he'll take a quick small package loss without trying to get the
last word in.
"Stone Cold" Moy Lazzario may want to think about changing his
gimmick... the bottom line is that he's not getting it done in the ring. Just
like at Spontaneous Combustion, tonight's match ended with him flat on his
back, being pinned by Tim Bell. Perhaps if he'd work on his technical wrestling
skills, which have always been his strong point, rather than his brawling
skills he'd achieve more success. Despite several good efforts, it looks like
Moy Lazzario might not be quite cut out for a brawling style of match.
Once again, when the chips are down and the titles are on the line, the
Wrecking Crew comes through with a big victory. A terrible night for the Golden
Society wasn't made any better by a loss to the VCW World Tag Team Champions,
the Wrecking Crew. Then again, what can you expect? The Wrecking Crew haven't
lost a pay-per-view match since Wrestlewar nearly a year ago; to say that they
have a history of success in pay-per-view events would be an understatement.
All of the theory about Bass Rogers's bulk, power, experience, and
toughness compensating for Crimson's height and reach was crushed tonight in a
mere seventeen seconds when Crimson clobbered Bass Rogers from behind, laid him
out with a devestating power bomb, then easily lifted him for the finishing
Chokeslam. Crimson, still basically undefeated in VCW, has yet to find an
opponent that can survive ten minutes in a one-on-one match. On the other hand,
he hasn't had a chance to face Troy Black, Falcon, or Gabriel Black yet, so
time will tell.
David Wright Hubbard had considerably more difficulty adapting to his
larger, more powerful opponent, but he also found the road to success tonight,
defeating the Torturer. Not only is he a more than capable brawler; David
Wright Hubbard is also a skilled technical wrestler, and this skill worked well
for him tonight as he brought down the less mobile and skilled Torturer. With
nothing left standing between David Wright Hubbard and Falcon except an old,
unsettled grudge, Falcon may end up in a very unpleasant situation at
Wrestlewar.
Richard Tobian's guest referee, Tully Blanchard, turned out to be the
pivotal point in his match tonight against "Pretty Boy" Jimmy Lockman, also
known as VCW Commissioner James Lockman. Richard Tobian handled himself quite
well against Jimmy Lockman's vast experience edge, and actually managed to stay
one step ahead of him with his superior speed and modern wrestling knowledge.
Of course, that didn't help him much when Tully Blanchard administered a
painfully slow count to the Fisherman Suplex that should have put away Jimmy
Lockman. Richard Tobian got up to complain, but that only allowed Jimmy Lockman
to roll him up in an inside cradle for a blatant fast count by Tully Blanchard,
who also conveniently ignored Jimmy Lockman's handful of tights. They were in
on it, of course, and despite a last act of defiance by Richard Tobian, the
last thing we'll see from him in VCW is the image of him being hauled away on a
stretcher thanks to Tattoo.
When Falcon and Troy Black stepped into the ring tonight, it was
acknowledged that they weren't leaving until somebody was pinned or somebody
submitted. Little did anyone realize that it would take over a half-hour of
both men fighting with everything they had to finally see one of them stay down
for the count. Only a few moments after taking a Superkick (which failed to
keep him down for the three-count), Troy Black somehow recovered enough to land
a dropkick on Falcon during a flying cross body press attempt, then recover to
put Falcon away with a double arm DDT and the Black Dagger after half an hour
of intense, heated combat from both men.
After the Inquisition's threats to Erica, and Lance Errington's refusal
to sacrifice his title shot for Erica's well-being tonight, it seemed like
Lance Errington would attack Gabriel Black more fiercely than ever before;
after all, if he had sacrificed this much for the title, what did he have to
lose? That logic held true throughout their match, which saw Lance Errington
work on the legs and the back of Gabriel Black to soften him up for a Scorpion
Deathlock. But Gabriel Black somehow refused to stay down, even withstanding
two minutes of the Scorpion Deathlock to hold onto his title. He was still in
serious trouble when he "accidentally" delivered a crushing body-check to
referee Jerry Rogers after taking a clothesline, and Lady Erica Whitmore made a
surprise appearance, only to shock everybody by entering the ring and nailing
Lance Errington with a chair. After taking several high-impact blows to the
head by Gabriel Black, including a hideous backdrop driver that nearly put him
in traction, this was enough to keep Lance Errington down for the pin,
especially when Gabriel Black used the ropes for leverage to secure his pinning
position.
After the match, Gabriel Black, Rebecca Black, and Lady Erica Whitmore
celebrated their victory, to the fury of the crowd. Lance Errington tried to
recover, possibly to gain a measure of revenge on the man who has seemingly
left him with nothing, but it wasn't to happen this time, as Gabriel Black laid
him out again with the VCW World Title. But the appearance of Troy Black in the
aisle immediately cast a somber mood on Gabriel's celebrations, and brought
hope to the crowd in attendance, as everybody was reminded that Troy Black's
challenge for the VCW World Title lies at the end of the road to Wrestlewar, on
the sixth of February this coming year. Gabriel Black certainly didn't seem too
nonchalant and confident about this coming challenge tonight.
Tomorrow night, VCW Monday Night Wrestling should be filled with answers
to questions, and more questions that need to be answered. After taking
crushing setbacks tonight both in the ring and in spirit, will the Golden
Society continue to exist on a functional level? How will Richard Tobian's
departure effect the upper echelons of VCW? And what kind of matches can we
expect for Wrestlewar, in a little over a month? Don't miss a potentially big
edition of VCW Monday Night Wrestling, the last VCW Monday Night Wrestling
program of the year. Make sure you tune in tomorrow night for all the action
you've come to expect from VCW!
