Match observations:
Tonight, VCW held Survival of the Fittest, a pay-per-view event that may
have helped to set the course of VCW for many months to come. We now know that
David Wright Hubbard will be in the main event at Wrestlewar, and after
tonight's title defense, it's looking increasingly likely that Troy Black will
be as well. It didn't quite compare as a show to Blood and Thunder, but nobody
could truthfully call tonight's pay-per-view uneventful.
Even in the Waste-of-Time, we saw the debut of a new team in VCW, the
Heavy Metal Express. Marty Jannetty returned to VCW competition after nearly a
year's absence, and brought with him a tag team partner, Lars Coverdale, that
seems to be athletically talented, but every bit as goofy as Marty Jannetty, if
not moreso. They defeated Russel "The Muscle" Taylor and the Super Giant Ninja
tonight, but it remains to be seen how well they fare against tougher
opponents. This tag team could be a success in VCW, but then again, it could
just be the second coming of the New Rockers.
As a result of the Middle-Aged Outlaws pestering Nurse Vivacia a few
weeks ago, "Doctor" Dave Adams and Main Street Pete took them on tonight in the
opening match of the pay-per-view. Despite an abundance of bravado, and their
attempts to add a stipulation to the match where Nurse Vivacia would leave with
them if they won tonight, the Middle-Aged Outlaws were (not surprisingly)
unable to win this match. This could be the match where Dave Adams and Main
Street Pete finally begin to rise to the upper levels of the tag team division
in VCW.
The team of Moy Lazzario and Steve "Mongo" McMichael was also successful
tonight, prevailing over the unlikely combination of Jiro Tobikuma and Arthur
Justice. It was obvious that Arthur Justice and Jiro Tobikuma weren't thinking
as a team, and despite impressive showings against Moy Lazzario and Mongo in
singles matches over the past month, they didn't fare so well in this tag team
match. Mongo and Moy Lazzario, on the other hand, were looking pretty
impressive tonight; they may have finally found a formula for success by
teaming up.
Despite a last-minute ruling from Virginia that moves that result in a
bump to the top or back of the head and submission moves were illegal in this
match, the Bikini Top Stripoff Match between Jennie and Christina Ellis for the
VCW T & A Title was a disappointment in more ways than one. Not only did
Christina Ellis win, taking the title away from Jennie, but she did so by
taking off Jennie's top in such a way that the crowd couldn't see her breasts,
then putting it back on again quickly. Jennie put up a decent fight, even
seeing as though she was about to win the match at one point, but Christina
Ellis just couldn't be stopped, and took her apart quickly. After the match,
Christina Ellis tried to injure Jennie with a series of backdrop drivers, but
Paul Canyon came to the ring and stopped the assault. Regardless of that,
Christina Ellis is the new VCW T & A Champion, and given her attitudes about
the division, quite a bit of change is expected.
The next match, made via a special request from Dick Douglas at the
beginning of the show, seems to have been a mistake on his part. Dick Douglas
faced Devaccio Pola in a Crowbar on a Pole Match, and fared rather poorly.
Throughout the entire match, he took a beating, barely hanging in there, but
when Devaccio Pola retrieved the crowbar, it was all over. Devaccio Pola
proceeded to beat the crap out of Dick Douglas with the crowbar, and the
Guillotine Kick seemed to be a mere formality to finish the match.
Bass Rogers's mystery partner, Dean Sanders, returned tonight from a
severe rotator cuff injury to face the Annihilators. However, the Annihilators
weren't exactly on the same page tonight either... Brian Rivera was highly
intoxicated, and as a result Jeff Wright wrestled most of the match himself. In
the end, it almost seemed as though Jeff Wright could win the match more or
less singlehandedly, but Brian Rivera took it upon himself to help, and
inadvertently caught his partner with a misguided clothesline, sealing his fate
against Bass Rogers and Dean Sanders. After the match, Jeff Wright verbally
berated Brian Rivera, but when he turned around, Brian Rivera broke a bottle of
liquor over his head, laying him out. I think it's a safe bet at this point
that the Annihilators are finished as a tag team. The team of Bass Rogers and
Dean Sanders, on the other hand, could have a long and successful future ahead
if they remain together.
The Manhunters were another tag team that had a lot of success tonight,
as they scored what some people consider to be an upset win over Johnny Smiles
and Virginia. The Manhunters are often underestimated, but there's a reason why
they were hand-picked by first Gabriel Black, then Jimmy Lockman as enforcers.
Their size, power, and experience make them a force to be reckoned with in VCW,
as Johnny Smiles and Virginia discovered the hard way tonight.
The victory by Jacob Idol and Rob Solomon of the Hammer of the Gods over
the Ontario Color Show would also appear to be somewhat of an upset. But unlike
the Manhunters, who won their match through brute force and size, Jacob Idol
and Rob Solomon's victory came as a result of the use of Rob Solomon's hockey
stick. After Owen Addison accidentally nailed referee Linda Peterson with a
savate kick, Jacob Idol beat the hell out of both Ontario Color Show members
with the hockey stick, then placed an armbar submission on Owen Addison, who
had no choice but to submit. Ever since Owen Addison's return, both the Ontario
Color Show and their reputation as the best tag team in VCW history have been
taking a beating.
After Blade of the Wrecking Crew was injured, Jack Norman and Butch
Manson of Hell's Bikers became the number-one contenders for the VCW World Tag
Team Titles by default, and faced the Immortals tonight. These two teams
obviously knew each other well from many of their previous meetings, and it was
equally obvious that they still had a lot of built-up resentment for each
other. Hell's Bikers managed to take control and dominate Robert Danson for a
period of time, but when he managed to take Butch Manson down with a surprise
lariat and tag in Ken Collins, it was all over. The Immortals proceeded to take
Hell's Bikers apart, ending with a victory after Ken Collins nailed Butch
Manson with the Flying Dropkick.
Neytron DelArmeggio once again stole a victory from Falcon, perhaps in
multiple ways. Early in the match, Lady Erica Whitmore tripped Neytron, which
resulted in a stern reprimand from referee Jerry Rogers. As a result, when
Neytron staggered into a superkick from Falcon after the trip, Jerry Rogers
wasn't there to count what would have likely been the pin within the first
fifteen seconds of the match, and Neytron kicked out at two and a half when he
came back. The match continued, an even contest between Neytron's technical
wrestling and Falcon's brawling, until Falcon appeared to have the match won
again with the Falcon Arrow... only to have Stacey Lockman put Neytron's foot
on the ropes. Falcon still seemed to have Neytron nearly beaten until Stacey
took things a step further, attacking Lady Erica Whitmore with a chair, then
distracting Jerry Rogers. Neytron went into his tights, pulled out a pair of
brass knuckles, and knocked Falcon out with them, then finished him off with
the Piledriver and covered him to win the match. Neytron DelArmeggio has
defeated Falcon twice in the span of a month, and neither victory was fair.
Surprisingly, Jimmy Lockman's victory tonight over Tattoo was almost
fair in contrast. Jimmy Lockman dominated the match, working over Tattoo's legs
and nailing him with repeated chops and jabs, but Tattoo just absorbed it all
and kept coming at Jimmy Lockman. After escaping the Figure-Four Leglock,
Tattoo finally seemed ready to open up and beat Jimmy Lockman senseless, but
when he went for the Jackhammer, Jimmy Lockman countered it with a small
package, pulling Tattoo's pants for leverage, and getting the victory as a
result.
Both Randy Savage and David Wright Hubbard advanced in the semi-finals
of the Survival of the Fittest Tournament, defeating Lance Errington and Julian
Page, respectively. However, after these matches, the advantage seemed to
belong to Randy Savage. Not only did he make short work of Lance Errington in
comparison to David Wright Hubbard's match with Julian Page, but in addition he
and Julian Page attacked David Wright Hubbard after his match, laying him out
and giving him a hell of a beating.
Despite that beating, David Wright Hubbard came back strong in the
finals of the tournament, taking the fight to Randy Savage. Whereas their first
encounter was a brawl, this was more of a wrestling match. Randy Savage
targeted David Wright Hubbard's neck, which was no doubt weakened from the DDTs
and piledrivers of his encounter with Julian Page, while David Wright Hubbard
went after Randy Savage's legs, complete with the bad knees that Lance
Errington had worked over earlier. In the end, after amazingly kicking out of
the Flying Elbowdrop, David Wright Hubbard rallied and hit Randy Savage with
everything in his arsenal, but the Macho Man wouldn't stay down. Finally, David
Wright Hubbard pulled out the ultimate weapon in his arsenal, the Flying Cross
Bodypress, and that was enough to keep Savage down for the three count, making
David Wright Hubbard the winner of this match and of the Survival of the
Fittest Tournament. Here are the results of the tournament in full:

Finally, the main event was next. Troy Black and Tony Garcia stepped
into the iron cage together, and immediately started beating the crap out of
each other. Tony Garcia's goal was obvious: to target Troy Black's back. The
power and size advantage of Tony Garcia was obvious, and within a few minutes
Troy Black was a bloody mess, being thrown around the cage like a rag doll.
Tony Garcia pinned Troy Black multiple times, after breaking a wooden axe
handle over his head, hitting him with a spinebuster slam, and catching him out
of mid-air after an attempted lariat from the top rope and drilling him with a
powerslam. But due to the rules of the match, Troy Black had to stay down for a
ten-count after being pinned, and he always kept getting back to his feet,
denying Tony Garcia the victory.
With Troy Black seemingly beaten to a pulp, Tony Garcia applied the
Torture Rack. Troy spent nearly a minute in the Torture Rack, but unbelievably
he escaped somehow, then somehow started making a comeback against Tony Garcia.
That wouldn't last long, however, before Neytron DelArmeggio and Gabriel Black
entered the cage, making the conflict three-on-one, and dismantled Troy Black.
Since this match was a no-disqualification match, the referee had to let it
continue, despite the fact that Troy Black no longer stood a chance. After
taking the Piledriver, then Gabriel Black's Destiny Driver, Troy Black was put
back in the Torture Rack, and this time there didn't seem to be any way he
could escape.
But Tony Garcia wasn't the only person who had backup in the arena
tonight, and Melissa DelArmeggio came to the ring, carrying an axe handle. As
it appeared that Troy Black was beaten, she climbed to the top of the cage,
then jumped off and broke her axe handle over Tony Garcia's head, just as she
did at Wrestlewar. Gabriel Black and Neytron DelArmeggio attempted to stop her,
but she managed to fight them off, at least until the H.A.R.P. Squad came to
the ring, unlocked the cage door, and forced everyone not legally involved in
the match to get out. However, on both sides, the damage had been done, and
Troy Black and Tony Garcia were both laid out on the mat.
When it seemed as though the match would end as a no-contest due to the
inability of the particpants to get up, Troy Black sat up to an explosion of
cheers from the crowd, then climbed to one of the top turnbuckles and dropped
the Black Dagger on Tony Garcia. Tony Garcia was pinned for the three count,
but amazingly he got back to his feet at the count of nine. After a double arm
DDT from Troy Black, then a second Black Dagger, this one from the top of the
cage, Tony Garcia didn't get up, and Troy Black was the winner of this match.
Troy Black retained the VCW World Title, won Melissa's contract away from
Gabriel Black, and survived the match that had nearly destroyed him at
Wrestlewar. The celebration after the match was no small event either, as an
attempt at a sneak attack resulted in Gabriel Black taking a Black Dagger from
the top of the cage, and Melissa kissed Troy as the pay-per-view ended.
It's difficult to say what will follow tonight's pay-per-view, but
fortunately we won't have to wait long to find out, as VCW Monday Night
Wrestling airs in a mere twenty-four hours. What is known is that many of VCW's
top wrestlers will be there, including Falcon, Survival of the Fittest
Tournament winner David Wright Hubbard, VCW World Tag Team Champions the
Immortals, and VCW World Champion Troy Black. You won't want to miss any of the
exciting action coming up tomorrow night on VCW Monday Night Wrestling!!
