Match observations:
One night removed from Deck the Halls, things have already started to
heat up for Wrestlewar. Many of the matches tonight were marred by outside
interference, for a variety of reasons. In some cases, old enemies were letting
each other know that their feuds aren't over by a long shot. In other cases,
the motives behind the meddling are less apparent... sometimes even totally
incomprehensible. Based on what we saw tonight, it doesn't look like there will
be any shortage of emotional, high-stakes feuds when Wrestlewar comes around on
February sixth.
Even from the opening of the show, the potential for big things was
apparent. Gabriel Black started the show not only by showing off his new
romantic interest, Lady Erica Whitmore, but also by challenging Lance Errington
to one more, high-stakes match in tonight's main event; Lance would put up his
career for one more shot at the VCW World Title. From the way the situation
appeared, after tonight there would either be a new VCW World Champion, or
another important person gone from the VCW roster. But as we found out,
appearances can be deceiving.
From there, we were greeted with a more silly situation. Moy Lazzario
came out to complain about getting screwed in last night's match against Tim
Bell (which is totalnonsense; nobody was cheated in that match), only to be
distracted by a mysterious man in a Santa Claus suit who was handing out VCW
merchandise to lucky fans at ringside. Moy Lazzario took exception, and brought
Santa Claus into the ring for a match... which he lost in just over a minute.
That's probably because Santa Claus wasn't the out-of-shape, jolly old man Moy
Lazzario was expecting, but Johnny Smiles in a costume. In hindsight, was it
really that surprising? Who else among the VCW roster would dress up in a Santa
Claus costume!?
Shortly after that, the Middle-Aged Outlaws decided it would be a good
idea to call out the Wrecking Crew. That ended with exactly the results that
everybody would expect... the Middle-Aged Outlaws were manhandled and defeated
within three minutes by the VCW World Tag Team Champions.
After that, things took a different turn. During a match between Paul
Canyon and his former partner in the Technicians, Jacob Idol, Julian Page came
to the ring and interfered in their match, going so far as to cost Paul Canyon
a certain victory while the referee was down. These two met last night in the
Waste-Of-Time prior to Deck the Halls, but why would Julian Page want to bring
up new trouble with Paul Canyon? It's not like he seems to have unresolved
issues with Paul Canyon... he won their match, after all, and seems to have no
real reason for what he did. Strange...
By contrast, Neytron DelArmeggio made it perfectly clear why he caused
Rob Solomon to lose to Bass Rogers via countout tonight; he wasn't satisfied
with his small package victory over Solomon last night. Neytron seems to want
to beat Rob Solomon convincingly, maybe injure him if that's possible. Whatever
the case, it didn't work out so well for Neytron tonight... he taunted Rob
Solomon for too long, and Solomon managed to recover and chase Neytron
DelArmeggio backstage. But he'll get another opportunity next week, as Rob
Solomon also challenged him to a match on next Monday night's show.
When Julian Page wrestled Tim Bell tonight, the unresolved issue of his
interference in the match between Jacob Idol and Paul Canyon became even more
complicated. Jacob Idol came to the ring, and while the referee's attention was
occupied with Jennie, who was trying to point out that Julian Page was pulling
Tim Bell's tights, Jacob Idol entered the ring and swung a chair at Julian
Page. Unfortunately for him, he hit the wrong guy, and left Julian Page
unscathed while knocking Tim Bell out. Owen Addison and Jennie could do nothing
but watch as the referee turned around just in time to see Julian Page crawl on
top of Tim Bell again and pin him for the three-count, continuing his modest
undefeated streak. Was Jacob Idol simply there to set things right, or is there
a deeper issue at hand?
After last night's crushing defeat at the hands of the Wrecking Crew,
the Golden Society team of Chris Champlain and Dean Sanders didn't seem the
same tonight, in their match with the Immortals. They didn't have the normal
unity and crispness in the ring that made them effective in the past, and they
just seemed off-focus during the whole match. Finally, Dean Sanders simply
walked out of the match, and Chris Champlain, for lack of anything better to
do, followed suit, giving the Immortals a countout victory. Is there something
amiss with Dean Sanders?
After the next match, it would appear so. Lance Errington met Gabriel
Black in a rematch tonight, Lance Errington's career put up against Gabriel
Black's VCW World Title. Lance Errington fought with a desperation and new-
found strength that he had lacked in previous matches, and it seemed that
tonight, if any night, he had a shot at winning the title. When he locked
Gabriel Black in the Scorpion Deathlock, well away from the ring ropes, it
seemed as though Lance Errington would, in fact, do the impossible and force
Gabriel Black to submit or pass out. Unfortunately, we'll never know whether or
not Gabriel Black could have somehow escaped on his own merits, because Dean
Sanders ran into the ring and floored Lance Errington with a thunderous
chairshot. Tattoo, the VCW referee for this match, had no choice but to
disqualify Gabriel Black, before chasing Dean Sanders backstage, ready to
administer some justice with the twenty-two inch, well-muscled long arm of the
law. Gabriel Black retained the VCW World Title, but because he defeated
Gabriel Black, Lance Errington's career is safe.
But, to put it simply, what is the matter with Dean Sanders? First, his
strange actions in the tag team match, and now costing his teammate and close
friend Lance Errington a probable VCW World Title victory. With Tattoo, the
Referee from Hell, in hot pursuit, he wasn't exactly able to stay around and
answer questions. Has he joined the Inquisition? Has he just snapped? Or does
he have some other plan in mind? Perhaps we can find out next week... I'm sure
that Lance Errington, for one, would very much like to hear an explanation.
Next week's show is going to really be a big one, as VCW heads back to
the VCW Arena in San Francisco, California. The Torturer, David Wright Hubbard,
Crimson, Falcon, and Troy Black will all be there, and a match featuring
Neytron DelArmeggio against Rob Solomon is a strong possibility. More questions
will probably be raised, and with any luck, some of the questions raised
tonight will be answered. Join us next week for another exciting wrestling
showcase on next week's edition of VCW Monday Night Wrestling!
