Match observations:
Tonight was, simply put, one of the most eventful nights in VCW history,
but not for the reasons that many people expected. Speculation among many VCW
fans held that Gabriel Black would lose the VCW World Title in the main event
tonight against his brother Troy, suffering his first true loss in the process.
And while it seemed as though just that would happen during several points in
tonight's match, we may never know what could have happened tonight if Troy
Black hadn't sustained a serious, career-threatening injury in the course of
the match that left him unable to continue.
Ironically enough, the show that was to see the very best in VCW go one-
on-one for the VCW World Title also had the distinction of hosting the first
meeting of the very WORST in VCW. Russel "The Muscle" Taylor and Haigeikobai,
two VCW wrestlers who are known for having won-loss records that Barry Horowitz
and Duane Gill could laugh at, met tonight in a match where ONE of them would
have to win a match for once. Though Haigeikobai was the favorite due to the
fact that he actually holds a couple wins due to flukes, Russel "The Muscle"
Taylor's clean, healthy lifestyle and hard work finally paid off (damn sure
took long enough) as he earned his first win in VCW over Haigeikobai. But now
the question remains; can Russel "The Muscle" Taylor continue his winning ways
and become a force to contend with in VCW? (Don't bet on it.)
The rest of the Waste-of-Time was time-killing at its worst, as usual.
The Middle-Aged Outlaws lost decisively to Rex Richards and Bass Rogers, as
everyone expected they would, and Steve "Mongo" McMichael, the newest member of
the VCW roster, picked up his first win tonight against the Super Giant Ninja,
in what was definitely a unique match, seeing that McMichael isn't used to
fighting an opponent larger and/or more untalented in terms of ring work than
himself.
Speaking of in-ring talent, VCW took a big step toward shattering the
illusion that women in North America don't have any, as Michelle Hubbard and
Rebecca Black both demonstrated considerable wrestling skills in their match.
In the end, it turned out to be somewhat of an upset as Rebecca Black defeated
Michelle with her choke sleeper, which she refers to as the Blackout. Of
course, she had to add insult to injury by ripping Michelle's top off... but
rather than flee backstage covering her breasts, Michelle made sure that
Rebecca paid for it by attacking her after the match and ensuring that she left
the arena on a stretcher.
After that display of talent and athleticism (as well as another kind of
T and A), another of VCW's female wrestlers came to the forefront to do battle
with one of the most dangerous, sadistic, just plain crazy wrestlers in VCW,
Chris Champlain. After being attacked with deadly weapons such as an iron mace
and a hunting knife, which resulted in multiple visits to the hospital,
Virginia was out for some serious revenge. But perhaps her injuries weren't
fully healed, because she was unable to defeat Chris Champlain, and ended up
taking a horrible top-rope Death Valley Driver through a table. After being hit
with that kind of a move, it's a wonder she didn't require hospitalization
again.
The Technicians were also out for vengance tonight, attempting to humble
the rising duo of Jacob Idol and Julian Page, who have really been having some
success in VCW lately, in no small part at the expense of the Technicians.
Unfortunately for the Technicians, Jacob Idol and Julian Page continued their
winning ways, beating the Technicians with technical wrestling by using a
sudden inside cradle to pick up the victory. That shouldn't be so surprising,
though; Jacob Idol is a former Technician himself, and certainly knows his
enemies well, while Julian Page has shown quite a lot of wrestling knowledge
himself considering how early in his career he is.
I guess if there's anything Moy Lazzario can learn from tonight's match
with Johnny Smiles, it's that it's not a good idea to mess with Santa Claus...
or Johnny Smiles. Despite an obvious lack of focus from Johnny (since when is
he focused to begin with), who also had problems such as Virginia's unfortunate
injuries this month at the hands of Chris Champlain on his mind, Johnny Smiles
defeated a much more technically skilled opponent. Is it just dumb luck, or is
Johnny Smiles being severely underestimated?
After complaining in the past few weeks about a lack of opportunities
for shots at the VCW World Tag Team Titles, the Immortals finally got what they
wanted. It turns out that they'll be going on to face the VCW World Tag Team
Champions at the Big Fight after they picked up a big win tonight in a triangle
match against the Manhunters and Hell's Bikers. The Immortals have been VCW
World Tag Team Champions before, and only lost the titles due to interference
from Hell's Bikers... could they be the team that has what it takes to beat the
Wrecking Crew?
The Annihilators didn't have what it takes tonight, that's for sure.
They put up a good fight, but even they ended up falling victim to the
Breakdown and walking away from their title shot tonight empty-handed. Will the
Wrecking Crew fare quite as well with the next challenge on the horizon,
against the Immortals? They've been pretty unstoppable lately, but most of
their big matches have come against power teams or various combinations of the
Golden Society. How will they do against a team that specializes in technical
wrestling and teamwork, like the Immortals?
After more than two months of off-and-on feuding, Rob Solomon finally
caught up to Neytron DelArmeggio tonight, defeating him in the middle of the
ring, winning the VCW Television Title for the second time in his career, and
avenging the injury of his friend Devaccio Pola at the hands of his opponent,
Neytron. Devaccio Pola is also expected to make a return within a month or so;
one has to wonder how he'll figure into this situation. Will he want revenge on
Neytron personally? Will he want the VCW Television Title back?
The matchup pitting Lance Errington against Dean Sanders wasn't quite
the technical display of mastery that everyone expected... it was more of a
fight. Obviously there were a lot of high emotional stakes in this match, as
both men wanted revenge; Dean Sanders costed Lance Errington a probable World
Title victory, while Lance Errington, according to Dean Sanders, brought about
the fall of the Golden Society. Tonight, Lance Errington avenged a previous
loss by beating Dean Sanders in the middle of the ring with the Scorpion
Deathlock.
Nobody expected any technical display of mastery from Crimson and the
Torturer, and we didn't get one. Crimson and the Torturer beat the living hell
out of each other using the iron cage and the wooden axe handle for nearly a
half-hour. Finally, the Torturer took a fall from a devestating clothesline by
Crimson into the iron bars of the cage, nearly cracking his skull open against
them, and falling easy prey to a Chokeslam, from which he simply didn't get up.
Crimson has done what not even Troy Black could do... he defeated the Torturer
in an Iron Cage Axe Handle Death Match.
Another encounter in a cage followed that one, and it was by no means
any less brutal than the previous one. Falcon and David Wright Hubbard brought
months upon months of feuding and resentment to the cage tonight, fueled even
more by tonight's events between Rebecca Black and Michelle Hubbard. Both men
made attempts for their finishing moves that were countered by the other man,
and ironically, Falcon even tried to beat David Wright Hubbard with a flying
cross body press from the top of the cage. The Superkick failed to keep David
Wright Hubbard down for the three-count, and a figure-four leglock by Falcon
had no more luck even after a concentrated attack on the leg of David Wright
Hubbard. In the end, David Wright Hubbard flattened Falcon with a flurry of
power offense, before nailing him with the Flying Cross Bodypress from the top
of the cage for the decisive victory.
What followed was the main event... the match that had been waiting for
one year, and finally took place tonight. Gabriel Black and Troy Black would
put each other through a half-hour of hell tonight, attacking each other with
everything not nailed down. Gabriel Black controlled a good portion of the
match, viciously working over Troy Black's neck, almost foreshadowing what was
to come. But Troy Black just couldn't be stopped... he kept sitting up, and
getting back up from everything Gabriel Black threw at him. He even kicked out
of the Destiny Hammer. Towards the end of the match, the near-falls told the
tale; Gabriel Black was tiring, and he didn't seem as though he could last. But
just when it seemed that he could do nothing to keep Troy Black down, and he
was perhaps minutes away from being beaten, disaster struck. Troy Black missed
a ringpost moonsault, and was knocked unconscious when his forehead struck the
ring apron. Gabriel Black, unaware of that, worsened his condition with an
inverted piledriver on the concrete floor from which Troy was unable to protect
himself. After that, it became clear that Troy Black, semi-conscious and
seriously injured, was unable to continue to participate in the match. To the
extreme disappointment of the fans, who could sense the impending fall of
Gabriel Black, Tattoo did the right thing and stopped the match.
To say that absolutely nobody expected Wrestlewar to end this way is an
understatement. The main event not only ended without the resolution that
everyone wanted to see, but it also ended with a serious injury to one of VCW's
top stars. This definitely puts a bleak spot on what otherwise was one of the
greatest VCW pay-per-view events ever. Tomorrow night, on VCW Monday Night
Wrestling, we may have an update on Troy Black's condition, in addition to
appearances by Lance Errington, the Technicians, the Immortals, and more top
VCW stars. Make sure you join us, as VCW recovers from the shock what took
place tonight.
So foul and fair a day I have not seen.
