Results of VCW 11/04/01: Lars Coverdale and Ken Collins defeated The New Immortals when Collins made Lazzario submit to the California Crossface in 0:10:46. Rating: *** 3/4 --Notes: With this being the opening match, and given who the participants are, one would have expected this to be a comedy match. But that wasn't the case, as the New Immortals suddenly remembered that they knew how to wrestle, and kept up with Lars Coverdale and Ken Collins in a non-stop tour-de-force of action and excitement. Bobby Danson and Moy Lazzario both seemed intent on proving a point by taking down Ken Collins, who was a member of the original Immortals with Danson, but instead Collins vindicated himself by forcing Lazzario to tap out after a breathtaking match. Dean Sanders pinned Tommy Hustle after a brain buster in 0:02:23. Rating: ** --Notes: They may not be friends, exactly, but these two men have worked together from time to time in recent weeks. However, that was all out the window tonight. Dean Sanders came on strong from the opening bell and cut down Tommy Hustle like a human chainsaw to earn the quick and decisive victory. Buried Treasure Match: The Jolly Rogers defeated The Pacific Masked Marvels in 0:07:50. Rating: * 3/4 --Notes: The Jolly Rogers took on two unknown masked wrestlers in this contest, where a giant sandpit with an X to mark the spot was set up near the ring entrance. The object was for the wrestlers to be the first to dig up a chest of treasure from that pit. The Masked Marvels used some nice teamwork and competent brawling tactics against the Jolly Rogers, but the end came when Tom Guycot went wild and started Tomahawk chopping everyone, providing enough of a nuisance for Dave Adams to grab a shovel and clobber both Masked Marvels into unconsciousness. They dug up the treasure, which turned out to be a chest of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Rob Solomon pinned The Green Dragon after a flying dropkick in 0:03:50. Rating: * 1/4 --Notes: Aside from a nice Samoan Drop and a few clotheslines and punches from the Green Dragon early on, this was all Rob Solomon. He broke the Green Dragon down with his kicks and lariats and a few more signature moves. At the end, it seemed as though he wanted to finish with the Katana Legdrop, but the Green Dragon got up too soon, so he used a flying dropkick instead. Chris Champlain and Mary Cohen defeated La Princesa Lobo and Hasan Gilden when Champlain made Princesa submit to a clawhold in 0:06:09. Rating: ** 1/2 --Notes: Chris Champlain and Mary Cohen gelled unexpectedly well in this match, providing a mix of bitter aggression and pure sadism against their opponents. If La Princesa Lobo was more or less the equal of Cohen, the cocky, cheesy Hasan Gilden was certainly not ready for Chris Champlain, who took delight in beating the confidence and cool out of him. In the end, Mary Cohen brought Chris Champlain in against La Princesa Lobo, and to her credit, she attacked him with all of her inner fury. But Chris Champlain, larger, unafraid of pain and injury, and if anything more vicious, made relatively short work of her and seemed to enjoy breaking her viciousness down into helpless suffering and pain. Michelle Hubbard pinned Lizzie Carter after a DDT in 0:05:15. Rating: * --Notes: The limitations of both women became very clear in this match. Lizzie's aerial moves missed the mark a few times, and Michelle Hubbard's broken-down physical state left her wrestling this match in a ground-based style at half speed. Michelle's sheer toughness and experience won out in this contest, though fortunately Lars Coverdale saved Lizzie Carter from a post-match attack. The Tough Customers, Brian Rivera and Marylin Silvera defeated Hell's Bikers (Butch Manson and Jack Norman) and The Wrecking Crew when B. Rogers pinned Blade after a big splash in 0:20:56. Rating: ** 1/2 --Notes: The Tough Customers and the team of Rivera and Silvera made for a strange union, but not quite as odd as Hell's Bikers and the Wrecking Crew actually joining forces after years of rivalry. Despite obvious tension, both teams held together pretty well until the end, when a few instances of miscommunication led to accidental blows struck against teammates, and the whole thing degenerated into one giant brawl between all four teams. In the chaos, Bass Rogers managed to stay focused enough to put Blade away with some big power offense. After the match, everybody brawled until the Tough Customers ran Rivera and Silvera off and laid out the other two teams with chairs. David Wright Hubbard pinned Brujah after a power bomb in 0:14:41. Rating: ** 1/2 --Notes: Another close, hard-fought match for David Wright Hubbard, who once again went all-out at the expense of his chronic knee problems. His experience and size advantage was an even match for Brujah's youth, aggression, and surprising power, and both men brawled for all that they were worth. Brujah proved his resiliency, kicking out after a lariat and the Flying Cross Bodypress, but David Wright Hubbard's toughness was proved as well when he kicked out after Brujah's Swandive Headbutt, then countered his Power Bomb with a backdrop. A duel of lariats ensued, which David Wright Hubbard barely won, subduing Brujah long enough to put him away with a power bomb. Virginia, Komachi, Sadako Momotani and Melissa DelArmeggio defeated Christina Ellis, The Pink Kitten, Heather Dannon and Pauline Vietjohn when Melissa pinned Heather after a kick to the head in 0:17:33. Rating: *** --Notes: Sadako Momotani's first VCW appearance was a success, though given the situations of this match it's not all that surprising. Heather and Pauline were obviously not in top shape by any stretch, and Christina Ellis and the Pink Kitten seemed shaken to see their former friend, Melissa DelArmeggio, on the opposite team. Melissa made no secret of her belief that Ellis and the Pink Kitten betrayed her by not leaving VCW with her, and she was happy to attack them and their partners with no remorse. The losing team held out for quite some time on youthful energy and fighting spirit, but they were never in any danger of winning this match. The Knights of the Squared Circle and Gabriel Black and Lance Errington battled to a double countout in 0:20:04. Rating: *** 1/2 --Notes: After last night's double countout against the Ontario Colour Show, the Knights of the Squared Circle fought to another one tonight, this time intentionally. Gabriel Black and Lance Errington had it in for them tonight, taking them apart with sound tactics and even using some nice double-team power moves to get Jockey Oldcastle off of his feet. Though the Knights of the Squared Circle stayed competitive, including a lengthy section of the match where they targeted Gabriel Black's back, as the match drew on and Jockey Oldcastle's depleted stamina left Monty Pompous nearly wrestling at two-to-one odds, they realized they couldn't win. In a stroke of what passes for brilliance, Jockey Oldcastle managed to apply a camel clutch to Gabriel Black on the outside of the ring, while Monty Pompous kept Lance Errington busy in a desperate fight. Both men were counted out, making this match a draw. Johnny Smiles pinned Paul Canyon with the Smiledriver in 0:16:35. Rating: **** --Notes: With his partner going for Crimson's VCW World Title, Paul Canyon faced Johnny Smiles in this close, exciting match. Despite having the clear advantage on paper (greater quickness, greater technical ability, equal size), Paul Canyon found Johnny Smiles to be surprisingly resourceful and tough to put away. After a back-and-forth contest in the end, the Magic Carpet Ride only got a near-fall. Paul Canyon tried to use his partner's finisher, the Tombstone, to end the match, but Johnny Smiles slipped out of it and hit the Smiledriver for the victory. Post-match, both men shook hands and walked away with respect for each other. Egyptian Extreme Falls Count Anywhere Match: Russel Taylor and Sophie defeated Jacob Idol and Jasmina Chastity when Sophie pinned Jasmina after a jumping front kick in 0:10:05. Rating: DUD --Notes: By this time, the sandpit used for the Buried Treasure Match earlier had been converted into an Egyptian setting, with small pyramids and a sphinx and a miniature version of the Nile flowing through the middle. Russel Taylor was dressed like Moses, Jacob Idol like Julius Caesar, Sophie like Cleopatra, and Jasmina Chastity was wrapped in bandages from head to toe like a mummy. The match was a wild, silly brawl, albeit one with such high spots as Jacob Idol hitting a moonsault off of the tip of the Great Pyramid. After Sophie defeated Jasmina Chastity, she unravelled her bandages to expose her in nothing but a black thong. Russel Taylor scolded Sophie for that as Jacob Idol and Jasmina Chastity ran away, the latter covering her bare breasts. Crimson pinned Owen Addison with the Chokeslam in 0:26:13. Rating: **** 1/4 (Crimson retained the VCW World Title.) --Notes: Given a rare opportunity like this one in the main events, Owen Addison held nothing back. As if realizing that he wouldn't be able to get away with a lethargic, sleepwalking performance in this match, Crimson also turned it up a notch and went after Owen Addison with wrath-fueled intensity. Unable to keep Crimson down with just mat wrestling, Owen Addison used several high-risk moves to get Crimson off of his feet, then brought Crimson crashing to the mat with a few high-impact suplexes before fatigue set in and that had to stop. But Crimson's retaliation carried crushing force, bouncing Owen Addison all around the ring and leaving him in a sorry state. In the end, it took everything Owen Addison had left to plant Crimson with the Tombstone, but Crimson kicked out at two and three-quarters. Owen went for a second Tombstone, but he didn't have the energy left to lift him again, and Crimson shrugged him off and hit the Chokeslam for the victory.
